Ad creative: what it is, and how to make ads that work

Ad creative is everything a person sees and hears in an ad: the image or video, the hook, the copy, the headline and the call to action. On Meta, Instagram and YouTube it has become the biggest lever an advertiser controls. The platform handles more and more of the targeting, so the creative decides who stops. This page covers the parts of an ad, the main formats, and a simple way to make and test creative, with links to the free tools and examples on HookAds.

The five parts of every ad

  • The hook: the first line or first two seconds, built to stop the scroll. Most ads are won or lost here. Browse the Hook Bank for patterns.
  • The visual: the image or footage that shows the product, the problem or the result.
  • The body: the copy or the middle of the video, which explains with proof why the viewer should care.
  • The headline: the short line under or on the ad that carries the main promise.
  • The call to action: one clear next step, such as Shop now, Learn more or Sign up.

The main ad creative formats

  • Static image ads: one image, usually with a short headline on it. Quick to make and quick to test. Start from our free ad templates.
  • Short video: Reels, Shorts and feed video, where the first two seconds do most of the work. Plan one with the ad script generator.
  • UGC: a creator or customer talking to camera. It reads as content rather than an ad. See AI UGC ads for the AI version.
  • Carousel: several cards in one ad, good for ranges, steps and before-and-after stories.
  • AI-generated creative: images and video made from prompts. Browse AI image prompts for ads and AI commercials.

How to make ad creative: a simple process

  1. Start from evidence. Look at what competitors keep running in the ad library, and save the best ones with the Meta ads downloader.
  2. Pick one angle per ad: a problem, a result, a comparison or a story. An ad with three angles usually lands none of them.
  3. Write five or more hooks for that angle and check them with the hook checker.
  4. Make the ad in the format that suits the angle, and preview it with the ad mockup generator before it goes live.
  5. Launch several versions that differ in one thing, usually the hook, so you learn which change made the difference.

How to test ad creative

Test angles before you test details. Three ads with three different angles teach you more than ten ads with small wording changes. Keep the audience and budget the same across versions, give each one enough spend to judge it, and change only one thing at a time. When a winner starts to fade, refresh the hook or the visual and keep the angle. Our guides to building a creative testing system and spotting creative fatigue go deeper.

Ad creative FAQ

What is ad creative?

Ad creative is the content of an ad that people see and hear: the image or video, the hook, the copy, the headline and the call to action. Targeting, bidding and budget are separate. They decide who sees the ad and how often.

Why does ad creative matter so much?

Platforms like Meta now do much of the targeting automatically, so the ad itself has become the main way to reach and persuade the right people. The creative decides who stops scrolling, and strong creative usually costs less per result.

What makes a good ad creative?

A good ad creative has a hook that stops the right person, one clear angle, proof that the claim is true, and a single call to action. It's also made for the placement it runs in, such as vertical for Stories and Reels or square for the feed.

How many ad creatives should I test?

Test a handful of different angles rather than many small variations. Three to five ads that differ in angle or hook give you a clearer answer than a dozen near-copies.

Start with the hook

It's the part of the ad that decides whether anyone sees the rest. Score yours for free.
